Real is Tangible. Living is Full of Life. Furniture and Art ARE BOTH.
FURNITURE RESTORATION
"RESTORATION is the action of working to Restore things to their original condition, and state of Usefulness." "CONSERVATION is the planned management of Natural Resources." "CONSERVE is to keep from wasting."
Restoration borders closely and overlaps into Conservation. To use all that is given, in a conservative manner. Something as simple as an area that is damaged and needs replacing, the mere removal of that piece would lean towards wasting. If in fact this piece in all or part could be utilized IN the Restoration of this piece, therefore it would not be wasted, it would be used. Veneer panels or areas of loose veneer. If a large enough area is damaged, veneer would be removed and replaced. The removed veneer would be cut and used elsewhere in smaller scale elsewhere on the piece. The species and age of the veneer is the same, it would splice-in unnoticeable.
As simple as adhering to Principles of "Waste Not, Want Not." What is given ought not be wasted, for it would be a waste. Some Artists use given or found objects in Art much in the same way. Either in some sort of representation, or seeing something in a completely different way- and finding alternative use for objects. This too, is key.
The Empire Chest of Drawers pictured here, had extensive veneer damage on the drawers as well as the front curved columns. Large areas of veneer were removed from the columns, and used to splice-in repairs on the drawers. One drawer in the photo is noted with white squares at the splices. The ribbon striped Mahogany veneer used on the faces of the columns, came from a salvaged Mahogany buffet from the same era.
